Re: BDU/ACU/TRU/etc

Indeed. Propper have the OD 2-pocket BDU, the same one that LawPro has, in the 65poly/35cotton ripstop. I'd like a 60 cotton/40poly version, or perhaps a all cotton one as they are more comfortable and the version they use in the show seems to be rather cottonish, but I might be wrong. Is it know what kind they use on the show?

Unfortunately it seems that the only OD 2-pocket shirt out there is in 65/35 poly-cotton. For some reason the 60/40 version isnt aviable in OD. I've looked on eBay, at Propper, UScav, QMuniforms and so on.

Well, accuracy is good. Stich seems like high quality , quite expensive though.

Yes he is quite expensive.. but the quality is second to none.. another guy you can check out is Dan Kim.. he's LostnCyber on SciFiHero.net

I'm pretty sure you'll find the ones in the show were 100% ripstop, from what I can remember. The propper shirts I have do soften up after a couple of washes.

Re: BDU/ACU/TRU/etc

TRU-Spec is a good brand to go with and wears well. Propper is good & holds color well through repeated washings. The rip stop is very practical for out in the woods. LT Ackerson has also found that it works very well when you work in retail & there are places in the store room & elsewhere that can snag clothes. While others end up with torn slacks - his end up with mostly small holes. The reinforced seat & upper leg area help make the pants last longer.

For the most part, I think they either had custom made for the show that looked like what is used by the military or purchased through various suppliers doing military accurate products.

For more costume sources we do have a Quartermaster thread with links to various suppliers as well as being the place to order your SG-Operations patches.

Re: BDU/ACU/TRU/etc

The BDU shirts that they used on the show were most likely custom. But the bright side is that you can get these fairly cheap by taking a BDU blouse and taking the bottom pockets off. Then using the material to make epulats on the shoulders. That is what I did for my DCU BDU's. Now on to the TDU, TRU, BDU issue. TDU's and TRU's are way different than BDU's, in way of construction, and cost. Since I am on the West coast I usually use Major Surplus, LA Police Gear, and BOTACH Tacatical for service uniforms. Check out thier clearence sections. I remember LA had plain BDU pants for $20. I would stay away from MARPAT and go with Digital. I know what you are saying "What's the difference ???" Well, 2 things, every 18 square inches on MARPAT is the USMC insignia, and the price is outragious!!! Commercial Woodland Digi's or Desert Digi's are available on the web fairly cheap. And at 10ft you can't tell, unless you work with the stuff everyday.

Re: BDU/ACU/TRU/etc

There is indeed a lot of fun things to put together, and I know my self enough to know that it is easy to get carried away when it comes to getting costumes. So now I just focus on getting a good version of the BDU's and next on the list is patches and some rip stop pants that matches the shirt I got from QMuniforms in color.

Re: BDU/ACU/TRU/etc

If you're going for 100% Ripstop, then you might want to consider the below from Out-In-Style.. though these are the four pocket shirts and you'd need to remove the pockets and make the epaulets yourself.

One of the things you'll notice is that even on the shows, that costumes/uniforms varied. In general, when putting together a costume for the SG fandom, you should follow a 10' rule... i.e. does the costume look correct when viewed from 10' away. Granted, people will strive for 100% screen accuracy, but that can get rather expensive for those of us with budgets and RL bills.

That said, the "LawPro Super BDUs" are a great product and the 65/35 blended ripstop should not disappoint you and will probably last longer than the 100% cotton version, I know that the fade qualities should be better on the 65/35 blend.

Re: BDU/ACU/TRU/etc

Bills is indeed a problem. Im familiar with the 10' rule from other reenactments and it will do in a pinch but, as you say, its fun to strive for the 100%.
