Announcing Stargate Resistance!



Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment announces Stargate Resistance

The very first video game set in the Stargate television universe will be Stargate Resistance, developer Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment announced earlier this month (story). Resistance is an online, third-person shooter set for release early in 2010.

The announcement got us very excited (we’d buy it just to dial a D.H.D. and walk to and fro through Stargates) — but also a bit cautious about the studio’s decision to release another title before Stargate Worlds, the massively multi-player online role-playing game that has been in development for years. Stargate fans have been burned before, with the SG-1 game The Alliance cancelled late in its development and Worlds itself postponed due to the disastrous effects of the economy. Will Resistance break the Stargate video game curse?

Things certainly look good so far, with development already in the final stages and investors supporting (and indeed, pushing for) the game’s release. But what sort of game will it be? Where does the story fit into the SG-1 timeline? Is it accessible to casual gamers, who may pick up the title as Stargate fans first and gamers second? And what does the demands SGR placed on the studio’s resources mean for Worlds?

We took our questions to Cheyenne Mountain, where reps were extremely straight-forward and candid (another good sign from the studio, which before now has gained a bit of a reputation as less than communicative with an anxious fan base). Our thanks to Resistance producer Kathryn Dutchin, Shane Hensley, President of Game Development, and marketing director Jeremy Taylor for getting our questions answered.

GateWorld: What sort of game is Stargate Resistance? What’s the basic premise, and is there an anticipated release date?

Kathryn Dutchin: Stargate Resistance is a third-person, persistent shooter. In addition to the familiar PvP combat of many online shooters, players will gain experience with each class, advancing in rank which will ultimately provide buffs they can apply to their entire team in a fight.

There is also a larger game of galactic domination taking place within Stargate Resistance. Each win on a particular world will matter, counting toward the overall control of that region of the galaxy by the faction you are playing. Control of specific regions will affect how each faction experiences the maps, and what options might be available in the future for those worlds. We will be continually adding new maps, achievements, unlockables and features to the game, to keep the universe rich and new.

The game will release within the first quarter of 2010.

I spent some time on there site and it looks pretty cool you can choose between a soilder a commando and a scientist. the graphics look very cool. It will be a shooter that you can play in a group. I cant wait.

Stargate Worlds developer Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment says its recently-announced Stargate Resistance project is a near-term solution to help it "ride out the economic wave" and finish its long-awaited MMO amid funding problems.

The company confirmed third-person shooter Resistance earlier this month. Now, in an interview with Stargate-focused site Gateworld, the title's producer, Kathryn Dutchin, discusses how the game is helping the studio keep Stargate Worlds alive.

"Cheyenne had a top team developing a persistent online shooter when the economy went belly up, and our funding dried up," says Dutchin. "Since Worlds, at that time, was at its peak burn, and very expensive, and we were also facing some of our toughest technical challenges with that title, to make it robust and ready for market, it became impossible to sustain the team and other studios as well."

The privately-funded Cheyenne encountered pressure from investors to release a title within a short time frame, but low funds meant that Stargate Worlds couldn't be finished in time, she continues.

"So, building and releasing Stargate Resistance became the best option for Cheyenne, and its investors, to ride out the economic wave, and keep Stargate Worlds on the top tier it deserves," she says.

Adds Dutchin: "We’re no less anxious to finish Worlds, but this title has been a blast, and we’re excited to see it becoming ready to ship."

GateWorld: What was the reasoning behind the decision to release SGR as a PC-only title? Unlike an MMO, this seems to be the sort of title that would be right at home on the XBox 360 or PS3.

Kathryn Dutchin: While we are launching on the PC, we are certainly open to other platforms such as Xbox 360 and PS3 in the future, if the demand for those platforms is there.

GW: Are the images released online so far final renders? Some of the models seem a little blocky or blurry, like video game graphics from a few years back.

KD: Some of the early images release were not final renders. We are currently in a polishing stage with the game and as we get those final tweaks in, we will be releasing additional screen shots.

GW: With such a long development time, how does your team handle the challenge of keeping pace with the technology used and the quality of PC games that are out there?

KD: Stargate Resistance has been in full development since around September. We are using a current build of Unreal 3 engine which is a leader in technology for PC games.

GW: Is there a master storyline behind the game? Is it set at one particular time during SG-1’s run (e.g. before the defeat of the System Lords in Season Eight?)

KD: While we are not pinning down an exact date, the battles in Resistance are occurring a few years after Season Ten of SG-1. There is a vacuum of power with the major System Lords being brought to justice. Now remaining Goa’uld, Jaffa and Ashraks have banded together, hungry for the power they believe is theirs to claim and bent on destroying Stargate Command and all that it represents. They have mounted a massive assault across the galaxy, using the Stargates to pillage worlds and enslave the populations they encounter.

Stargate Command has expanded into the international defense and exploration organization that they were becoming on the show. S.C.G. represents the only organized resistance to this mounting threat. They are using the Stargate to travel to alien worlds and defend them from the System Lords.

GW: Will Resistance include any familiar characters from the TV shows — especially SG-1?

KD: As I mentioned above, Resistance is set a few years after SG-1, however we won’t rule out a cameo at some point in the future!

GW: Will I be able to play this game by myself, in a single-player mode (such as pre-made levels or campaigns)? Is there any offline play available?

KD: Stargate Resistance is a team-based online game, so no.



An old foe is back, as the Goa'uld System Lords once again threaten the galaxy.
GW: Will I be able to play online with others, if I don’t know anyone else who owns the game?

KD: Absolutely! We will offer players the option to join a match of their choosing or if they prefer to “quick join” and be connected to a match automatically.

GW: Will I be able to play the game (and enjoy it) as a novice, or will I be easy pickins’ for more experienced gamers?

KD: One of the benefits of a third person perspective shooter is that it tends to be easier to jump in and go. Even players new to a shooter style game should be able to get their footing fairly quickly and compete with those who may have more experience.

GW: Will there be public beta testing for this game?

KD: There is no open beta currently planned for Stargate Resistance.

GW: How about a downloadable demo?

KD: No. We feel the scope of the game does not require a demo version.

GW: The game so far seems to be very Stargate SG-1 in its focus (characters, races, weapons). Will future expansions include people, places and things from Atlantis and the Pegasus Galaxy? What about Stargate Universe?

KD: The System Lords will not likely be satisfied with just one galaxy and it is very possible that they have set their sights on the Pegasus Galaxy.

GW: So what is your favorite part of gameplay so far, when you sit down to play Stargate Resistance?

KD: Personally, I really enjoy the huge variety of tactics that I can try out through the six different classes. If I want a straight up spray and pray with a P90, I can choose a soldier and go. If, on the other hand, I feel like stealthing around the map and exacting calculated vengeance, an Ashrak lets me do that. We have a class to fit every mood and every play style.

I also really enjoy the focus on team work. Each class can hold their own, but when you combine the strengths of the team classes you have a truly formidable enemy and a very exciting battle!
