Gary Gygax D&D

Gary Gygax, the father or Dungeons and Dragon, died Tuesday morning.

I was going to post this in the RPG section, but nothing seemed to be going on over there.

Wow, sad news indeed! If it weren't for him and D&D, i would never have gotten into gaming...

Re: Gary Gygax D&D

Yes, TSR's Basic and Advanced D&D is what got me into gaming as well. Gary Gygax was a major player in RPGs during the 70-90s and he will surely be missed. His philosophy that the rule books and supplements were to be used as a guide only and that the individual GM and players should be the final deciding factor on the rules of a given game, have been lost to the recent gaming generations. Younger gamers seem to be more than willing to adhere and quote verse on the published rules and lost the ability to be as creative as most gaming systems would allow.

Most probably don't know that many of the heroes and villians in the AD&D core, come from Gary and other's own home ran campaigns. I believe the World of Greyhawk was entirely based on their own campaign and used as a testing ground for early AD&D revisions and game supplements.

For those interested... Dungeons & Dragons

Re: Gary Gygax D&D

Sad news indeed.

I owe Gary many nights and weekends of sitting around the kitchen table littered with manuals, character sheets and dice with my brother and our friends playing D&D, eating fried bologna sandwiches and cheese doodles, having many adventures and laughs.

Sigh. probably explains why I never had a date until my 20s.

Re: Gary Gygax D&D

My gaming life began with D&D as well. My parents bought me the old Beginners Box Set (the red one with blue dice and a crayon included).

I didn't even have any playmates for the game so I would play the beginner's module over and over, doing things a bit differently each time.
