Re: Syfy Cancels 'Stargate Universe'

Reviving this just to say that these last episodes of Universe have been so startlingly good. It is a shame that they got cancelled before they hit this stride.

The chemistry of these characters is reminiscent of SG-1 to me. And Epilogue has me in tears. Wow. I am very sad that this week is the finale. Looks like it will be a cliffhanger. And darn it, SyFy, you've screwed me over with cancellations in the middle of stories before (Farscape and Sliders come to mind).

So, don't forget to watch this week and if you haven't been tuning in this season, do yourself a favor and watch it now.

Re: Syfy Cancels 'Stargate Universe'

Having watched the series finale last night, "Gauntlet," I felt that it was good but could've been better.

The episode came across as a cliffhanger and left more questions than answers, in my opinion. :? This is especially true since MGM's recent financial status has meant no Stargate Atlantis and SGU direct-to-DVD movies are in the works at present.

The questions that came to my mind:

What will happen to the one stasis pod that wasn't fully operational?
The Lucian Alliance had plans to invade Earth. What happened?
Can Eli Wallace survive three years alone, given the limited supplies & power needs Destiny has?
Will there be more attacks by the unknown alien drones?
If Eli needs to get supplies via the Stargate, how can it be done (if he's all alone)?
How many of the other stasis pods will survive?
What about the health of Lisa & TJ (if they survive stasis)?

Whether they'll be answered anytime soon is unknown. :(

I wish that "Gauntlet" would have given us some answers.

Re: Syfy Cancels 'Stargate Universe'

Hmm, Eli wasn't meant to stay on the ship awake, etc for three years, but rather has two weeks to fix the stasis chamber. Otherwise, I believe that he'll sacrifice his own life, as the life support can not be sustained for three years, as well as, maintaining the power to the chambers and FTL drive.

I kinda wanted more from the episode, but actually respected the producers decision to end the series wherever the cards fell. As the last night's episode was never meant to be a series finale, but rather only a season finale. In that way, the show has the ability to be picked up and carried forward. Yes, I'm still hopeful that someone will see the light and breath new life into the SG franchise.

Re: Syfy Cancels 'Stargate Universe'

If the whole series would have been as good as the last 10 episodes then I think things would have been different. However something tells me we have not seen the end of the Destiny maybe in oh say three years? :?:

Re: Syfy Cancels 'Stargate Universe'

I find it "convienent" that there were exactly the right amount of stasis chambers... not even one extra.

I think it was a great episode but I soooooooooooo want more. I think a sci fi tv show needs two years just to find it's legs. It should have been given at least one more year to prove itself...which I think it did in the last 10 episodes anyway. The only reason it didn't pull in enough numbers in my opinion is because Sy Fy abandoned it. There is no way a show of this quality shouldn't success unless the network didn't give it enough attention.

Re: Syfy Cancels 'Stargate Universe'

It was a bit cheesy that the number of stasis pods was equal to the number of people onboard. I could see them having a handful too many or too few. But even with that, it was a great moment for Eli!

I definitely hope we get some movies out of it, but who knows? And while SyFy does have a history of letting shows that don't deserve it fall by the wayside, It was terrific scif and will be missed.

SPOILER ALERT: HIGH
If you haven’t seen the final episode of SGU yet, beware of spoilers for “Gauntlet” below!

The last episode of Stargate Universe may have left the major story arc unresolved and the crew’s fate undetermined, but it did provide some important emotional closure as fans head into the void between Stargate galaxies along with the crew of Destiny. The entire crew ended the season in stasis, ready for a 3-year journey to the next galaxy on the ship’s route — all except for Eli.

In a new interview with AOL TV’s Mike Moody, executive producer Brad Wright explained that the ending of “Gauntlet” was meant not just to set up a third season, but also to provide some degree of closure — just in case the show wasn’t renewed.

“We wanted it to be both [a season finale and a series finale],” Wright said. “I had pitched the idea of putting the crew into suspended animation — with someone having to stay behind because one pod didn’t work — because I thought it made for an interesting reset of the Earth side of things.”

Advancing the time frame three years into the future would certainly allow for some change-ups when the crew came out of stasis and revisited Earth using the communication stones, while retaining the current character dynamics on board the ship.

“A three year time cut would have been interesting,” Wright said. “The story of the person that was going to be left behind was also a great opener for Season Three.”

The final scripts were being written when Season Two kicked off with “Intervention” on its new night. Wright expressed concerns about the show’s move to Tuesdays in interviews leading up to the premiere, and those October ratings proved that his worries were well-founded. SGU averaged 1.09 million viewers over the five episodes aired that month, which ended with Syfy cancelling its lead-out partner, Caprica.

“When we saw the Tuesday night ratings on Syfy we knew it might be the end,” Wright said. “By having our leads come together for one last meal before going off into the void, we got a chance to see them as a team in the way we were always working toward. And by making the person left behind Eli, it brought the series full circle. Those two elements make it feel like a finale.”

So where was Destiny going? What was the final payoff of the show’s arc? For now, Wright isn’t talking.

“I don’t want to say where we were going to go with the story,” he said. “It didn’t happen, so the show is what it is now. I think a pretty decent two seasons of television.”

To see the rest of Wright’s comments, including his plan to compress SGU‘s story into a movie that brought together SG-1, Atlantis, and Universe (a plan on which MGM passed), check out the full interview at
