Air Force Drone mistaken for UFO

On Monday, a US Air Force drone that was being transported to a test facility by flatbed truck created quit a stir as residents thought they were seeing a UFO. The object turned out to be an XB-47 drone wrapped in tarps for the trip.

If I remember correctly the B-47 designation was used already in the early 1950s. I presume that Northrop-Grumman liked the nomenclature so much that they just had to borrow it from Boeing, or it belongs to the Air Force and they can do what ever they want with it. correction: the drone was an X-47B

The full report and link to the original story is below:

June 14th, 2012 | By Ron Recinto

Some folks in the Washington, D.C., area are buzzing about what they thought was a UFO atop a flatbed truck on the Capitol Beltway.

Turns out the disc-shaped object was just a run-of-the-mill military drone.

MyFoxDC reports that what drivers saw—and some photographed—around 11 p.m. Wednesday on Interstate 270, and then later on Interstate 495, was an X-47B Unmanned Combat Air System being transported from Edwards Air Force Base in California to the Naval Air Station Patuxent River in Maryland for testing.

During its travels through the D.C. area, local station WTOP reported a flurry of activity on Twitter about the strange-looking object.

This not the first time a drone was mistaken for something alien. Last year, a drone being transported by flatbed to Pax River for practicing aircraft carrier takeoffs and landings was also mistaken for a UFO, the Daily Caller reported.

Re: Air Force Drone mistaken for UFO

The P was for pursuit and you are 100% correct in all categories. The US Army Air Corps changed from F for fighter to P before the war, the US Navy had a more complex system as their planes were muli-role.
The current system also uses an A for attack as in the A-10, F/A 18 and the AC 130 as well as an E for electronic as in the E3 AWACS, E/A6 and the E/C 130. Other aircraft carry other prefixes depending on specific tasks, K for tankers (KC -135 and KC-10), C for cargo ( the KC planes are both tankers and cargo )R for reconnaissance and a bevy of special purpose tasks. These pertain mostly to Air Force but most Navy planes follow this system, but a few do not, the S2 Viking is an anti-submarine search plane as is the P3 Orion. I can only assume the S is for search(carrier borne) and the P for patrol (land based), the Navy always did march to a different drum. And the B-47 was the Boeing predecessor to the B-52. Now that we talked about fixed wing, lets talk about helicopters............. :D

Re: Air Force Drone mistaken for UFO

The Boeing B-47 was the country's first swept-wing multi-engine bomber. It represented a milestone in aviation history and a revolution in aircraft design. The Boeing B-47 was an all jet design. It had a relatively short service life as it was phased out of service with the introduction of the B-52.

Check out http://www.boeing.com/history/boeing/b47.html for a full history of this outstanding aircraft.
